This upcoming election is perhaps one of the most important elections that our City has faced in over 100 years because of the important financial, development and zoning decisions that the Board of Aldermen will have to make.  My past service on the Board of Aldermen demonstrates my philosophy and abilities to address these important issues in a way that will protect all of the positive values that we see in Somerville.  If the wrong decisions are made, then the Somerville that we now know could forever vanish.

I hope this website will provide you with information about my service as an alderman at large as you consider the candidates.  I want to thank you for visiting my web site and I thank the residents of Somerville for having given me an opportunity to serve as an alderman at large. This “hands on” experience at the level of government closest to the people has taught me a great deal about being an effective representative. During these years, I have offered creative and progressive solutions to the pressing problems facing our community.  Feel free to to explore my background and stance on the important issues facing our community in this site.

Bill White

During my service on the Board of Aldermen, I have received endorsements from the following:

  • Sierra Club of Massachusetts
  • Somerville Police Employee’s Association
  • Somerville Municipal Employees Association
  • Somerville Labor Coalition
  • Somerville Firefighters Local 76
  • Progressive Democrats of Somerville
  • Since I first ran for alderman at large,The Somerville Journal, has endorsed each of my candidacies.  In its issue of  October 15, 2015, in endorsing me for the last election, the Journal stated, White . . . continued to do excellent work on the board. . .,continuing to keep the board focused and a check on the mayor as its president.   Four years ago, on October 24, 2013 in endorsing me it stated,  Bill White, especially during his tenure as board president this year; has been the most vocal check on proposals and plans from the mayor’s office and the most willing to scrutinize details, down to line by line readings of the budget.  The aldermen are often accused, sometimes by themselves, of being a rubber stamp for the mayor’s policies and White has led this year’s turn away from that designation.
  • The Somerville Times in its October 28, 2015 edition had this to say,  William A. White Jr., who is currently the President of the Board of Alderman and who has been re-elected President several years, gets our endorsement because of his knowledge of rules and is one who knows how to be the person who can expedite the meetings. One thing you have to hand to Bill is his uncanny way sometimes of seeing the bigger picture and knowing how to get answers. Bill knows how to ask those questions that some might not get and see the bigger picture better than most. Bill White’s experience on the board and his being able to address the real issues of what is going on in the city is one of the reasons he’s been called the so-called brains of the Board of Aldermen. We support him and endorse Bill White for one of your four votes for At Large.
